Its the biggest release in terms of size and scope since Live 8, and if you want to keep all your existing projects intact, download it now. Thats right, you can. I never lost my original database – because the only copy of it was in my computer at that time (and even now it’s on a USB stick hidden from my wife’s eyes).

Ableton was coming out with a new version – Live 10 – but there were a lot of problems with that upgrade. So the decision was made to wait before making another upgrade. When they released Live 11, a number of the people I knew who were using Live (along with a lot of people I didn’t know) decided to upgrade. I jumped on the Live 11 bandwagon and for the last few months I’ve been living with it in beta. And I’m still using it today.

Live 11 is a major overhaul of the entire interface, workflow and most importantly of all the feature set. If you’re a longtime user of Live, you’ll know what to expect.

As I mentioned there are quite a few new features in Live 11 and they’re implemented very differently depending on whether they’re actively in the beta or not. That’s mainly because not all of them work the same way when you’re using beta software and I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. Some of them are still beta, and should be used with a degree of caution.

Ableton has started calling Live “Dynamics” instead of “Live” and I don’t think it makes sense, but I get it. It’s an alternative name for the name of the software. I get that. Some of my Max for Live compositions include real-time controllers and mobile devices for triggering samplers and sequencers, as well as live coding loops and patches. This technique is currently limited to a few Max for Live projects, but can be expanded into other applications in the future. Ableton Live 9 allows the user to use one keyboard as a master and another keyboard as a controller. What is Ableton Live good for?

I guess this decision is rather individual. If you are just into making music for fun, then it does not really matter. In this case Live is only a toy you use to have fun, it is not something you use in order to make profit.
Of course if you use computers to compose music professionally, then a DAW is essential to you. In this case you need to make sure the software is not too bloated and has a good workflow and good flexibility.
If you are more into composing music you might want to check out Ableton, Logic Pro or something else.
If you want to get to know some DAWs and be motivated to do further studying, then go ahead.

You should not feel pressured by who is better. You will find your platform perfectly suited for you.
If you really are just looking for a good tool, you are probably best served by sticking with something you know well and works fine. Try to be a bit more open-minded and think of it as finding the best tool for you.

In case you find the cost of the licence daunting, there are some options available. Which are worth mentioning is that for a student is one of the most reasonable options.

I use the tools I know best. To be honest, I also use a few others, namely FL Studio, Cubase and LMMS.
