What is McAfee Internet Security and what is it for

Closing our assessment of McAfee Total Protection on Windows 10, we continued to look at the standalone version. It has a whitelist feature that blocks websites for which you don’t want ads or other network activity. So, if you’d rather play on a browser with no 3D or screen-distorting effects, that’s doable. There’s also a scanner that reveals potential threats. The device blocks them, so there’s no need to unblock them.

Below you can see McAfee Total Protection running in a side-by-side comparison with Authorize.net (that’s the company that we use to process our credit card payments for the lab tests). Note that the screen shot is taken from a low-spec Lenovo ThinkPad T470.

In addition, Internet Security has fewer features. It excludes tools such as the Hitman Pro sandbox, which mimics actual malware for testing purposes.

McAfee Internet Security is set up to work with a license on its own, not a particular version of Windows. You don’t get a product key, as you do with McAfee Total Protection.

Our test system was an ACER E5-575G-6T0 with a 2.2-GHz Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Internet Security included 229GB of files. McAfee Total Protection included 245GB of files.

McAfee creates all its own malware detectors and antivirus programs, some free and some tied to a monthly subscription. McAfee’s Internet Security & Encryption is the family’s equivalent of its antivirus software and is a sort of all-purpose security suite. With it, you get the McAfee Frontier service that covers both mobile and desktop devices; McAfee LiveSafe personal and small-business antivirus protection for Windows PCs; and McAfee SmartDefense for Macs, which offers similar antivirus, remote-management and Wi-Fi security as its Windows counterpart. The family’s free trials are three days for Internet Security, seven days for LiveSafe and 30 days for SmartDefense.

In most cases, you get all the same features that appear in antivirus/antimalware software as shown above, plus the ability to look up where a file came from. You can also employ the McAfee engine to hunt down cybercriminal websites and scan for malicious links that you find on your own devices or those of others.

It’s a personal-defense type of tool, not aimed at anti-malware specialists, and it’s a deliberate design choice by McAfee. It does stop some attacks that other security suites can’t, such as meeting computer spies in online chat rooms.

If you are a non-techie person who wants an Internet Security package with modern features that just happen to be free, then McAfee is your best bet. It does have limited features for a free product, however.

If you’re a security-specialist type who wants a versatile security suite with advanced tools and a big database of malware samples, then McAfee is not for you. It’s unlikely to be the best tool for the job, and it may do things that you don’t want it to do, so be careful before you install.

When I installed the McAfee suite, I ran into two problems. First, the McAfee home page loaded up so slow that it was painfully slow to scroll to the results of the search. It took two full seconds to scroll up to the results before I could even see them. This seems like a technical oversight, but something tells me it was intentional.

Spam filters for all these utilities are integrated into the product. McAfee’s content blocker can also optionally scan messages before they’re even opened. Web sites that don’t pass McAfee’s test can be more difficult to use, so you can pre-sign in to a web page, a session that runs in the background until you close the browser or close the browser window. You can also display an icon that tells you whether a site passed or failed the McAfee test. It’s a neat way to visit a site without leaving a telltale sign of the test.

Installation was easy. McAfee performed an extended scan of our files and a scan of our network. We then agreed to install the product on all machines running Windows XP or later. The installer offers to download updates if they become available, along with the beta versions. It also offers to download and install third-party programs from the web. That can be handy, but you’ll want to open the program’s settings, which are accessed by clicking the gear icon. The first page is “Download List,” where you can see any products you’ve installed. You can also download and install third-party programs.

That brings you to the “Privacy, Security & Updates” page, which lets you update products and set your product options. We selected “Turn off product advertising,” which prevents product banners from appearing. We also selected a 3-5 day scanner to check for security updates. The next page lets you manually download and install updates. Updating will require a reboot.

The scans of our files were quick, even with this latest version. They’re done in the background and take about two minutes. The network scan took about an hour. It’s about a million times slower than our home network’s security appliances.
