In order to assess the level of OpenOffice.org use within the FPS Economy, two questionnaire surveys were conducted. The first survey was issued to a small sample of 50 FPS users (excluding the FPS Economy), which included representatives of, e.g., education, local government, trade and commerce, and the European Commission. The second survey was issued to the members of the OpenOffice.org development team, in order to learn more about the actual level of use.
The small sample of 50 FPS users indicated that office use was very low. Only one respondent indicated that he sometimes used OpenOffice Download Free.org, in order to exchange documents with friends. In addition, some representatives of the FPS Economy stated that they could not remember using OpenOffice.org. None of them indicated that they were completely satisfied with OpenOffice.org.
A large number of technical staff members of the FPS Economy reported that they were using OpenOffice.org (in combination with Microsoft Office) for some of their daily tasks. The majority of the users interviewed used OpenOffice.org for dataintensive tasks, such as statistical data analysis. Although OpenOffice.org offered sufficient functionality for these tasks, other open source office suites could also be used. One technical staff member indicated that he used OpenOffice.
In this case study, OpenOffice.org is mostly used by the users who are not comfortable with Microsoft Office, and who would, therefore, prefer to have a uniform user experience. If users can freely choose between the two office suites, it does not need to be their main concern, since OpenOffice.org could be considered just another office suite.

After having used OpenOffice, MS Office and Apple Keynote for the past 4 years, I find it hard to go back to the Windows world. OpenOffice is a much more powerful office suite. It has far more functionality than MS Office or Apple Keynote. It plays nicely with windows, is the more modern presentation tool, and integrates well with other applications. In fact, I dont miss having a Mac at all.
The obvious strength of open source, and the reason to use it is the fact that it is free. OpenOffice is not like the other word processing products out there. In fact, its unique design makes it perfect for non-technical users. Its easy to install, use and updates happen automatically. It is also the most powerful office suite available. Its a fine open source alternative to MS Office. Its far superior to WordPerfect. By the way, what’s the difference between a word processor, an office suite, and a word processor that also comes with an office suite? Nothing. And thats the way its supposed to be.
OpenOffice was renamed to LibreOffice after a huge community campaign against the commercial StarOffice. The makers of OpenOffice are independent from Sun Microsystems and they follow their own corporate interests.
There has been a lot of talk about OpenOffice and LibreOffice, and many people are wondering which one to use. There are pros and cons to both of them, and since OpenOffice is the older of the two, there are pros and cons to using that one as well.
One of the drawbacks of OpenOffice and LibreOffice is the fact that both of these are web-based applications. The developers of OpenOffice have established a wiki at https://www.openoffice.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page which is great. But as you can see on their wiki, it’s all about OpenOffice.

LibreOffice is an office suite software project that was begun in 2003 as an open source fork of OpenOffice. Since 2008, LibreOffice has provided licenses that allow commercial companies and individuals to use it, including the free BSD-like GPLv2, the slightly less free LGPLv2 and the proprietary Apache License 2.0 (modified by the Apache Software Foundation). LibreOffice is currently under the BSD-like License 2.1, which provides a more permissive license, and allows developers to contribute to the project. LibreOffice is the default office suite on the FSF’s Linux distributions, GNOME, and KDE.
OpenOffice is an office suite, a set of complementary applications used to create, edit, view, and manage office documents. OpenOffice.org is an open-source office productivity suite using a Java programming language-based framework. OpenOffice.org provides a native port for the Mac operating system, including support for text, spreadsheet, presentation, database and drawing. The Apache OpenOffice is a free and open-source office suite developed by the Apache Software Foundation in Ottawa, Canada. Initially, the project goal was to provide an alternative to the Microsoft Office suite for Linux, but the package also supports document format interoperability with Microsoft Office.
OpenOffice has gained momentum, especially with the recent release of Apache OpenOffice 4.1 and the complete death of Star Office. The point is, you can use Apache OpenOffice today to edit and save documents. It looks and feels just like the ubiquitous Microsoft Office suite. To a recent user, it might seem a bit clunky to switch from the command line to the Microsoft environment. If you dont use the command line, that is. For the early adopters, though, OpenOffice has proven to be an up-and-comer in the fast moving world of Office suites. And it does it at a vastly reduced price.
